Overcoming Distance With Your Lover During COVID-19

Hearts were shattered for a second time on 21 April, after the ban on social gatherings was said to be extended. For those who aren’t fortunate enough to live under the same roof, this meant spending two months apart from their other half. To all the lovebirds out there, we've compiled a list of ideas to bridge the gap between you and your +1 with technology.

Play games

No, mind games aren’t on the list. We’re talking Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games (MMORPG) like Club Penguin, Maple Story, Audition and Habbo Hotel. Animal Crossing is (still) blowing up the internet but if you’re not a fan, revisit your childhood with these old school games and see if you still have what it takes to be the best penguin or dancer out there.

Alternatively, mobile gamers can turn to classics like Mobile Legends, Rules of Survivor and PUBG. Other games include Hide Online and Cooking Battle, inspired from the famed Overcooked. What’s a game without bantering? Unleash your competitiveness in real time over a video call, which makes for easier communication too!

Watch movies together

Traditional movie dates have been shelved with Coronavirus on the loose but thankfully, couples can still catch up on movies online. For the best experience, take advantage of the many platforms and Chrome extensions out there to stream movies in real time. Some come with cool features like video call, chat rooms and the added ability to pause videos on Netflix Party in case someone needs to make a quick toilet run. Other platforms such as Watch Party, SyncPlay and Kast work just as well too.

If you’re a Netflix and chill kind of couple, we’ve got a not-so-dirty little secret for you: Durex is looking for brand ambassadors! Choose from our selection of 3 campaigns with payouts ranging from $15 up to $51.50.

Dinner date

Distance limits the things you can do together but when life gives you lemons, make lemonade, right? Cook yourself a nice meal (preferably similar to your partner’s) then switch out your day-old PJs for a nice dress, and put on some makeup before e-meeting your lover. To help you get into the mood, you can even exploit Zoom’s background function to literally set the ambiance.

If you’re feeling fancy, light a candle and bring out some drinks to seal everything together. This is the perfect opportunity to better understand each other on a deeper level.

Surprise delivery

Since it’s virtually impossible to travel all the way to your partner’s house, the next best option is to send love in the form of surprise deliveries. Choose your gift and leave the rest to your trusty delivery guy.

The possibilities are endless – send them some food, clothes, a bouquet, games, or something they’ve been wanting for a long time. It’s a simple gesture to remind them that they’re on your mind despite the LDR.

Nothing online caught your attention? Take advantage of same day courier services to deliver a homemade meal or your mini art and craft project to your significant other. This is guaranteed to make them swoon over you, and is way more thoughtful.

Learn a new recipe

With time on your hands, make the most of it by learning how to cook a meal for your other half once you’re reunited. If, like myself, you can’t cook like your life depended on it, this makes the best surprise, hands down.

Another way to go about this is to prepare the same meal simultaneously over a video call if you’re up for a challenge. By the end of it, you can upload a picture of both your end products online and get your friends to vote for the most appetizing dish.

LDR isn’t easy (cue flashback to NS days) but for all you know, you and your other half might emerge stronger than ever. Please stay home and minimize the chances of another extension with us. Till then, stay safe and madly in love!
